Wine money- 1679

My interest on this list concerns  Elisabeth and Maria Schoonhoven, which I think is a tax on wine.

I can see that they paid 1 and 16 but I don't know what that means. I assume it's for the quantity of wine owned/purchased but who decided/knew how much wine you had?

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Many thanks

Anne

Dear Anne, above the numbers on each page stand two words, one that I cannot directly decipher - although it is classical Dutch 17th-century script - ending on s, and the second word is gl. for gulden. When you check the other entries it becomes clear 1/2 combines with 8 guilders, 1 with 16, and 1 1/2 with 24 guilders. I presume this is indeed a tax on wine. The wine mesure is the thing eluding mee, it snot an aam... Is it perhaps an okshoofd?! See for old measures and weight the database De oude Nederlandse maten en gewichten of the Meertens Instituut, Amsterdam, https://mgw.meertens.knaw.nl/

Dear Otto

Many thanks for your efforts in deciphering this text.

Yes I'd noticed the multiples of x 8 in the list. I'll check out the link you sent.

I did google 'wine tax' 17th century Holland' and found some very interesting information, particularly how the measurement within a barrel was calculated. Apparently Antoni van Leeuwenhoek In Delft was a 'wine gauger' before the start of his scientific career assembling microscopes.

very best wishes

Anne

Evening Otto

Just out of interest I thought I'd let you know that I think I've worked out the measurement for the wine in the list we looked at.

In English it's 'Hogshead' and in 17th century Holland 'okshoofd' which is just what you thought it said. It equalled 60 gallons of wine!

best wishes

Anne

Dear Anne, thanks for your quick research on this measure! In the database of the Meertens Institute I read that depending on the local variations an okshoofd contained between 225 and 233 liter, see https://mgw.meertens.knaw.nl//maat/97 . The amount of tax suggested to me already a larger content, an okshoofd was equal to six anker.
