Robert Bunn 1622

Can someone give me a sense of what the numerous mentions of tobacco pipes (especially on page 368) refers to please? I can see that Robert Bunn is also mentioned as a musketeer in the company of Sir John Ogle but is there any other information regarding his pipemaking?

Thank you.

Sorry, the second image doesn't seem to have loaded

Just had a quick look. It appears that the document is an agreement between Robert Bunn and midshipsmen (adelborst) Abraham de Ruytter. Robert acknowledges to be in debt for 170 guilders and 16 stuivers and promises to repay this amount to Abraham de Ruytter in 5 equal portions, a protion to be paid every 3 months. The debt is for the purchase of a large amount of tobacco. Robert guarantees the payment by setting his quarters and belomgins as collateral, hence the inventory on the second page.

Thank you Rene - that is very helpful.

I would be grateful if someone could transcribe the list of goods on p.368 for me, especially the part which lists the tobacco pipes. Thank you.

Will do so later this evening or tomorrow morning.

On this day, the 4th of January
in the year 1622, before me, Jan van
Aller Andriessen, public notary admitted by the Court of
Holland, residing within the city of
Rotterdam, and before the witnesses mentioned underneath,
has appeared Robbert Bon, musketeer in the army company
of colonel Ogle, garrisoned
within this city, who acknowledged to be well
and properly indebted to Abraham
de Mijtter, naval cadet in the company
of captain Canneloen, also garrisoned
here, the costs of his transaction, acquiring
a sum of 170 carolus guilders
and 16 stuy[ver]s, for one part originating from
money borrowed, and for another part because of
tobacco, bought by the appeared from the aforementioned De
Mijtter and received to his satisfaction,
of which the appearer acknowledges also to have
completed and liquidated this transaction with the aforementioned De Mijtter,
which aforementioned sum of
170 carolus guilders 16 stuivers
the appearer has promised, as he also promises by this document
to pay to the aforementioned De Mijtter or any person acquiring De Mijtter's
part of this transaction as of this current
date, this to be divided into payments of equal protions and parts,
each to be paid within the next 5 year's quarters, without any delay.
To assure the aforementioned De Mijtter of this, the appearer has specifically
set as collateral the appearer's belongings mentioned underneath,
which belongings are currently
---
in the house where the appearer currently is living,
located and situated behind the brewery called
Swarte Leeuw in the street called Wijnstraet in this town,
just like as is specified below

5 pillow-slips
5 head cushions
5 earpillows
10 bed sheets
5 blankets, both English and Spanish
3 crates containing tobacco pipes as well as
another 40 oarties of 144 tobacco pipes laying in
the aforementioned house
8 barrels for the purpose of manufacturing tobacco pipes
3 screwes
10 tin plates, both large and small
1 crate made out of fine oak wood
1 trunk, leather-clad
1 mantel with a bundle of men's clothes
of couloured English wool
1 iron furnace or stove

[The appearer] promising as a man of honour to deliver all aforementioned
goods to deliver to the hands of the aforementioned De Mijtter as means of insurance
in order to be reminded of his due payments
and in case of non-payment, the same [De Mijtter]
will be allowed to have all these goods to be removed from his home
and to be brought to any location he pleases to act as means of insurance
---
without using any judicial vigour,
and to keep the same goods with him,
in order to sell these - in case of mispayment -
as collaterals and to cash his payments
without having to sue him in court
in order to be concluded that these goods would be
collateral and therefore allowed to be sold for the due payments.
Furthermore the appearer sets as guarantee personnally and in general
all his belongings (none excluded) that he legally owns or that are legally his.
Finally, the appearer acknowledges that
all the tobaccosoil currently
lying in the home of the appearer,
worth 350 carolus guilders, is
owned by the aforementtioned De
Mijtter, without the appearer having any legal pretense to this,
but to use it to manufacture tobacco pipes for the aforementioned,
and the appeared agreed to
me, as notary, to expedite
a deed in legal form. Hence was done at the aforementioned
date at my notarial office, in the presence of
witnesses Jan Jansszen, woolen-cloth preparer and
Lucas Marcheliss, upholsterer of hats, inhabitants of
this city, who just like me, notary, have been authorized to do so

Thank you again. The extra information explains the slightly odd 'Acht tonnen omme tabacqpijppen te maecken' in that the tuns belonged to Bunn but the clay belonged to de Mijtter. Looks like he was gambling everything in the pursuit of a big profit from the wholesale tobacco trade. It seems it was a venture he didn't repeat.

It is always nice when you get references to things like 'Drie schroeven' as it gives an indication of the size of the business.

Thank you once again for all your help - you're most kind.
