Hello

Can someone be so kind to translate this from Middelnederlands to Modern Dutch if possible?

Thank you in advance

Dear Cata, your question is with a page from the Dagh-register gehouden int Casteel Batavia vant passerende daer ter plaetse als over geheel Nederlandts-India. 1624-1629, J.E. Heeres (ed.) (Tha Hague 1896), online at https://archive.org/details/daghregistergeh01kologoog/ , The whole series of editions is conveniently accessible at the portal Sejarah Indonesia, https://sejarah-nusantara.anri.go.id/daily_journals_volumes/.

The text you present here is in seventeeth-century Dutch, written in 1624, I would like to point you to a concise book by L. Koelmans, Inleiding tot het lezen van zeventiende-eeuws Nederlands (Utrecht 1978), digitized in the Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren, https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/koel004inle01_01/koel004inle01_01.pdf . This book could be helpful for other users of this forum, too. On another occasion I could track digital versions of two old English-Dutch dictionaries, Henry Hexham’s Het groot woorden-boeck: gestelt in ‘tNederduytsch, ende in ‘t Engelsch (1648), online, DBNL, https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/hexh001groo01_01/hexh001groo01_01.pdf , and William Sewel, A large dictionary English and Dutch (ed. 1735), https://archive.org/details/alargedictionar00sewegoog .

A full translation takes time, and this is a palarogrpahy forum, but I can give you at least quickly the core meaning of the contents. The load of the three ships going back to Holland contained spices and gems, and also indigo and copper. Jan de Rycke, a merchant, arrived with the yacht Den Haringh. Hecame with a report on the behaviour of pangoran Gedee who wanted to execute Chinese merchants who had brough pepper to Batavia, this against the opposition of other pangorans. The people would be happy with any action against Gedee who had forced others to follow his lead. Pangoran Ratu was in favour of peace, which would certainly succeed with helpt from the general governor (the gouverneur-generaal).

Dear Cata, I guess more can and should be done, at least to enliven solving your question! I checked for this particular volume in the archive of the Dutch East Indies Company held at the Nationaal Archief, Den Haag, finding aid 1.04.02, inv.no. 1083, fol. 382 holds the information in the edition, see https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/archief/1.04.02/invnr/1083/… (scan 916 = fol. 382v). I checked at Historische Woordenboeken of the INL at Leiden, https://gtb.ivdnt.org/search/#, for the word sattynen, but I could not yet spot it. Hopefully others here will help you to solve such problems.

Thank you Otto. That is incredible, I could not find the original manuscript before, only the 19th century compiled volumes. It seems few manuscripts are left anyway from dagh-registers van 't casteel batavia. Your brief context clarified some issues I had with my own translation (Google Translate + paleographic resources) and I'm more than happy for that. There are many Asian regionalisms adapted to Old Dutch in the text and that makes it even more difficult as you probably noticed. The Koelmans book does help, seems one way or another I will have to learn Dutch...Thank you for all the time you put into it, I owe you.

Thanks for your kind words! I can mention another useful linguistic resource offered online by the Huygens Institute, Amsterdam, a VOC-glossary, http://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/vocglossarium/.

Dear Cata, it was a bit early when I answered you this morning, I can give you more links about the VOC. At the TANAP portal, http://www.tanap.net/, you can find much about the VOC, with full introductions and inventories from archives worldwide. At the VOC Site, https://www.vocsite.nl/, there are glossaries for several subjects, including for products, saling, navigation and ship building; there is a good links section, too. At the VOC Kenniscentrum, https://voc-kenniscentrum.nl/, a site created by the Huygens Institute, you can find information on many subjects
