May 1659- property debt

This document features Ariaantge Jans who was recorded as the debtor.

Also included are Jans van Straten and Arent van Straten her 2 sons.

Does this say what the debt was for and why other family members are included?

Am I right that Ariaantge doesn't sign her name- just makes her mark?

Thanks for any help that can be given with this.

Best wishes

Anne

Hi Anne,

She is mentioned as having her own possessions as stipulated by her prenuptial arrangement.
Her husband is mentioned as grootschipper.
Her son Jan Claess van Straten, potter, also appears as her guarantor and co-debtor.
They are in debt with Beatrix van Middelhouck for 5,000 Carolus guilders (each guilder equal to 40 Flemish groten); this amount is loaned to them at an annual interest of 4 percent, this interest to be paid each year on 1 May.
They are allowed to pay back the full amount, provided they will inform the creditor at least 3 months in advance.
They put their persons and their personal belonging as collateral; in addition, Jan Claess van Straten puts as collateral two debentures issued by the provinces of Holland and West-Friesland, each worth 2,000 guilders and put to the names of the guardians of the children of the late Hendrik van Lodenstijn; as Jan was married to Maria van Lodenstijn, one of these two children, he was in possession of these debentures.
Finally they appoint Gerard van den Velden, Adriaen Copmeijer, and Pieter Rosa van den Velden to act as attorneys in case they fail to pay the interest and/or the loan.

Johan van der Straten and Jacob Wemmertss Hoppesteijn are mentioned as witnesses to the signing of this deed.

Fascinating as always Rene.

Ariaantge Jansdr (van Dijssel)  widow of Claes Jansz van Straten seemed to have a lot of debts.

In July 1659 there's a 'confession of guilt' document (in Rotterdam archives) by her and Jans Harmensz van d'Ijssel, large skipper and resident in Delft, and it states they have passed marriage contracts before Nicholas Vrijenberg on 23 Jan 1655 (just after they married) confess to being indebted to Maritime Gerritsdr, widow of Dirck Peters Koock, and amount of 2,500 guilders. Agreements are made about the repayment'.

Jacob Wemmentsz Hoppesteijn is her son in law, married to Jannetge van Straten.

There's probably more to discover....

warmest best wishes

Anne
