Dear J.J. Johnson,

Short summary:

* L. van Oosterwijck has been appointed legal guardian over the children of his late sister and her late husband; two children are still of minor age and under his legal custody.

* L. van Oosterwijck himself takes care of the daughter, his sister Maria takes care of the son. The son is a theology student with teh University of Leiden.

* Costs paid by the guardian and his sister on behalf of the children were reimbursed prior by Cornelis van Berendrecht, now deceased. One of his descendants has taken over this responsibility now.

* The letter displayed is sent by L. van Oosterwijck to accompany the request for reimbursement composed by his sister. It states that the costs are higher than usual because fo the need for new study books and winter arriving soon.

* L. van Oosterwijck supports this request and stresses that his sister is very careful in managing the affairs of the son.

Sir
After wishing you health and prosperity,
I show to you, noble Sir, because of your duty you have newly taken up with care,
in my position of custodian appointed by will,
excluding the Orphans' Chamber, by now only over
the two orphans left by the late Johan
van Assendelf, begotten with my late sister Geertruijd
van Oosterwijck, taking care of their alimentation and
other needs, by approval of the honourable magistrates
of the Orphans' Chamber of the City of Leiden, me taking care of the
daughter, called Adriana, and my sister Maria Oosterwijck
taking care of the son, called Jacob van Assendelf, currently
student of the holiest theology at the University of Leiden,
used to receiving restitution of costs paid by us in advance,
if accounted for by the request of and
received by the late mister Cornelis van Berendreght,
your noble's ancestor; to this prupose my sister will send
her maid servant, who will be delivering tyhis letter, to your noble, with
the account of costs paid by her in advance
on behalf of Jacob van Assendelft; the total amount
is larger than usual diue to the need of new study
books and because of the purchase of winter provisions; however,
having reviewed the account, I deem all costs mentioned,
as is usual with the careful managing of affairs regarding the youngster by my sister,
necessary, and, while he has started a quiet and God-fearing life, I
find it necessary to contiue this with God's blessing and a proper managing of affairs,'
regardless of the amount of money involved. Hence I request and
consent (for as far as it concerns me) the money paid in advance to be paid to the barer of theis letter or
to Jacobus van Assendelft,
on behalf of my sister.
In order that his will elad to mutual friendship,
I end this letter with respectful greetings and
presenting oy our services, remaining
your noble's humble servant
L. ab Oosterwijck.
