Hi Geert,

I don't know why this Forum won't let me reply to messages on my own threads!

In another document from 1617, Cleverley's age is given as 27 years old. His apprenticeship in London is dated 1604 so born c.1590. It is common to find pipemakers becoming tobacco dealers so a tobacco salesman is entirely possible. There was no guild control of pipemaking until the second half of the C17th in Leiden.

I am puzzled by the surname but more about the signature - I have seen someone go from mark to signature but not the other way around.
