Thank you to those that helped with the Claverley documents. Another one from 1623 which seems to relate to the same case shows Claverley making his mark at the foot of the document.

In the lefthand corner in this clip you can see the name of Niclaes Claveren, not written by himself, because he couldn’t write his name, but by the notary’s clerck. In the text his name is Claveren, but at the end the notary’s clerck wrote:
“+ Dits Niclaes Claverle’s merc.” This is Niclaes Claverle’s mark’.
