{1} In both cases, the registrar registered their name without the final t.
{2} The Jan Roodenpoortstoren was a medieval defense tower, located along the Singel and at the end of the Torensteeg. After the city's extension of 1616, it lost its defensive task and served partly as living quarters for the provost of Amsterdam, partly as prison. It was torn down in 1829.
{3} als voren = like before, referring to the address mentioned for the groom-to-be, possibly meaning thy already were living together (also opinions of specialist historians differ on that).
{4} In this case, als voren is used as a kind of shorthand, referring to the more or less standardized text in the previous registrations in the same source, containing text that they requested public proclamation on three consecutive Sundays and the solemnization of their marriage after three unhindered proclamations.
{5} Between 1614 and 1821, the Amsterdam gunfoundry was located at the current addresses Lijnbaansgracht 55-57/Gietersstraat 5-57 (the latter street name still referring to the gunfoundry).
{6} Widows who were still considered to be able to bear children and who wanted to remarry had to wait at least until the moment they could prove not to be with child from their recently deceased previous husband. If no birth / stillbirth / miscarriage took place in the meantime, a period of at least 7 months was considered to be the minimum (as pregnancy was expected to show physically after that time). This measure was primarily intended to avoid any problems regarding inheritance rights, nut may also have had moral aspects.
{7} The Koningsgracht was the name used in the 17th century for the Singel. The name was intended as tribute to King Henry IV of France, at that time an ally to the young Dutch Republic. The Romeinsarmsteeg is still existing, located between the Singel and Herengracht.
{8} The Zwartepaardssteeg was used for several small alleys. There was one at the current location of the Sonesta Hotel on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, another alley by that name was located between Raamgracht and Groenburgwal.
