1681-burial

This is the burial of Jans Harmensz van Dijssel in Delft.

I can see there are some notes at the side of his name. Can anyone tell me what they say?

I think the first- 14 dragers means 14 carriers, so presumably an expensive funeral?

Many thanks

Anne

12 September 1689
14 dragers,
een meerderjarige
en een minderjarige,
kints kinderen

Jan Harmens van Dijssel, weduwenaar aan de
Oude Delft, bij de Kloksteegh in de kerk.

The notes say that two of the 14 bearers were his grandchildren, one adult and one minor.

That's super, many thanks Geert.

It's a lovely detail about his grandchildren being bearers at his funeral.

very best wishes

Anne

Small addition: the note in the margin says that among the bearers is one child and 3 grandchildren.

Hi Anne and Geert,

I had a close second look at the register: the notes in the margin about the 'kintskinderen' are probably not referring to those as bearers, but as heirs; elsewhere in the register there are many registrations as well, including the mention 'geen kinderen' ['no children']. This also explains the mentioned difference between minderjarige and meerderjarige [respectively 'minors' (less than 25 years old and unmarried)] and 'legally adults' [25 years or older or married if less than 25 years old, as marriage also made persons legally adults]. For the first category, legual guardians should be appointed to guard their inheritance interests; the latter category could act on their own behalf (women within this category represented by a male family member, that is). As only kindskinderen (grandchildren) are mentioned in this registration (1 legal adult and 3 minors), one might wonder whether the children (the parents of these grandchildren) had died already.

Best regards, René.

Morning Rene

Well this is yet another mystery. As far as I can tell Jans Harmensz had one granddaughter, Anna Maria van der Leth, daughter of Petronella van Dijssel, who would have been 14 yrs old in 1681.

I guess the others could have been step-grandchildren from his first/second marriage?

Anyway thanks for your help as always.

very best wishes

Anne
