This concerns Jans Harmensz van Dijssel and his wife Adriaantje Jansdr van der Z(S)ande.
I'm unsure about the document as it was recorded as a 'marriage contract' but I understand Jans and Adriaantje married in 1655 Delft. So it seems odd they have a contract dated 18yrs after they married?
Can anyone help unravel this mystery? :-)
many thanks as always
Anne
Hi Anne,
This clarifies a lot. The first part refers to a prior prenuptial arrangement specifying the assets the groom-to-be would bring into the marriage. From the context we can derive that in this prenup he promised to give his spouse debentures (obligaties) and debt notes (schuldbrieven) and that he bequeathed his furniture to his children (from his previous marriage). The current document states that his wife handed back the debentures and debt notes to him and that he already gave his furniture to his children. This apparently was related to the fact that the couple obtained one-quarter of the ownerschip of a merchant ship called 'De Stad Delff'.
Really interesting Rene, thank you.
I love the detail about the furniture. It would have been really helpful to me if they had listed his children :-)
Also interesting they invested in a merchant ship as at that time as Adriaantge was running the pottery factory Drie Porcelyne Flessies.
very best wishes
Anne
