Do you know if 'brouster' means brewer? According to Google translate it says 'maid'- but that doesn't seem right to me.

some extra information...

brouster, in modern Dutch brouwster, is the female form of brouwer (=brewer)

I don't think the English language has its own word for a female brewer. In Dutch we can easily convert a male profession into its female counterpart. Likewise we add -je, -tje, -pje to create the dimunitive form of a substantive.

English lacks this almost completely, as I understand.

Well Andreas you've raised a fascinating point.

 Like you I had no idea that a) there were any female brewers in England, and b) if there were, what were they called.

With the help of Google I've discovered something completely new.

“Women once brewed and sold most of the ale drunk in England,” writes Judith M. Bennett in her book Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England.  English women who made beer were even referred to as “brewsters.” A term for a female brewer that has since fallen out of the lexicon.

So the English word was very similar to the Dutch equivalent!
