1661- Note from Delft archives

Above is a short index record from Delft archives that a friend has forwarded to me.

I've had a go at transcribing it, but would welcome corrections.

Many thanks

Many thanks Rene. I was quite close :-)

As I mentioned this was the index card.

My friend has now found the full reference. These cards and references were created by  Mr van de Burgh (1845-1904) from Den Haag who was a collector of Delftware and an archivist. They're from the huge notes (1650 pages)  he bequeathed to Delft archives. His notes were written up in 1960's onto 7,500 index cards, which is what we're seeing here.

So I'm attaching the full notes which were referred to in the card index. I think it has something to do with a dispute? with Pieter van Durven who owned a paint mill in Delft.

It would be great to understand why all the pottery painters from the Lampteken factory were asked to give testimony in the case.

very best wishes

Anne

The first group is working as pottery painters at the pottery bakery of Ariaantje Jans, the wife of Jan Harmens van Dijssel. Johannes Veltens Kolburch and Dirck Ariens van der Kest both were working as pottery painters in the shjop of Jan Jonasz van der Burch. Their testimonies are at the request of Ariaantje Jans. Geertge (the daughter of Jan Harmensz van Dijssel and Ariaantje Jans) first stated that, on the instructions of her mother, went to the paintmill of Pieter Gerritsz Durve on 25 July 1661 to demand a sample of white paint. The servant allegedly responded: if it would be fine, we will ship it to you. Two others also went to him and, although there was sufficient wind to have the mill producing paint, Pieter Gerritsz Durve refused to mill. When the others went to him to ask for the reason, he replied that they now had a mill of their own.

Second part:
Ariaantje Jans, with the permission of her husband Jan Harmensz van Dijssel (once he would return from his travels), has sold privately to Wemmer Jacobsz Koppesteijn and Jacob Wemmersz Koppesteijn (probably father and son), a house called 'De drie hekeltges' [The three little hackles] and surrounding ground on the southside of the Gasthuisplein, west of the house of Wemmer Jaconsz Koppesteijn, east of the house of Benedictus van Houten and his associates. Additionally, she also sold a small house currently used by Benedictus van Houten and his associates and directly at the southwall of the house called 'De drie hekeltges' and north of the house of Abraham Gerritsz, for the sum of 1300 guilders in total, of which 200 guilders is to be paid immediately with the transfer and the rest of the money to be paid later at an annual interest of 4 percent.

Dear Rene

That's fantastic- thank you so much. What lovely details about needing enough wind to make the paint. Intriguing reason given by Pieter Durve for not milling. I'll look into that.

The second part is also very interesting. You've helped me before with Ariaantje Jans and Jan Harmensz van Dijssel. She was his second wife, and was the widow of the owner of the Lampteken pottery factory. Although I've seen reference to Jan Harmensz as a potter, he's most frequently referred to as a skipper, so my guess here is that he's at sea.

warmest best wishes

Anne
