This deed has been composed on 13 August 1657 by Vitus Mustelius, public notary in Rotterdam at the request of Pieter Bosch, merchant in Rotterdam. Pieter Bosch represented in this matter the Amsterdam merchants Pieter Meerman and Jan Meerman, who had ordered him to act on their behalf. It is told that Jan Harmens Dijssel, skipper on the ship 'De Blauwe Fortuin' ['The Blue Fortune'] on his latest trip in Britain had loaded a certain load of wooden staves ['duigen'; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stave_(wood)] that needed to be transported to and loaded off in Bordeaux. Instead however, he had sailed to the Low Countries and onto the Maas river. Despite repeated requests by the merchants to continue his trip to Bordeaux, the skipper still had not done so, despite the fact that in the meanwhile other ships already sailed to Dieppe, La Rochelle, and Nantes. The notary was asked to demand from the skipper to continue his trip to Bordeaux and to deliver the load of staves there. The skipper replied to the notary that it was necessary to sail to Rotterdam in order to save his ship and cargo. He was still willing to complete the journey and deliver the cargo in Bordeaux, provided he still would be paid all expenses for this. In the end, the skipper mentioned the second reason for not yet completing this journey was that the bailiff of Schiedam had impounded his skip and had not yet released it from impoundment.
