1646- 10 Oct, preliminary agreement?

This deed follows on from the last one I posted, concerning Aeltgen Willemsdr Kittensteijn and her husband (to be?) Cornelis Pietersz de Coocq.

I can make out the name of Aeltgen's brother Jacob Willemsz Kittensteijn who was working for the VOC at that time.

I don't understand why he's featured? Also none of the parties sign this deed -i.e Aeltgen or Cornelis, so I'm puzzled what this is about?

Any help, as always, gratefully received.

very best wishes

Anne

p.s. This page precedes the following 3 pages which cover each individual item Aeltgen is bringing to this marriage. Is it odd that Cornelis doesn't seem to have a similar deed about what he's bringing to the marriage- as I've seen before in other prenuptial agreements?

It is a deed (procuratie) in which Willem Willemsz van Kittensteyn, authorised by his brother Jacob, who was at the Dutch office in the city of Ahmedabad in India (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmedabad), in turn authorised Guillaem de Graeff, notary in Amsterdam, to act on his behalf to start all necessary actions with the governors of the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) to receive the earnings gained by Jacob during his employment with the VOC (in total 840 guilders). This was a usual way to make sure that earnings made by VOC employees came to benefit their next-of-kin in the Netherlands.

Hi Rene

Many thanks for this. So it was pure coincidence that in the ledger the deed before Aeltgen's 3 pages of goods concerned her elder brother Willem and her younger brother Jacob :-)

Jacob actually went on to become the Governor of Ceylon in 1649. He left there in September 1653, only to die after a voyage to reach Batavia on 26 December 1653. His remaining family still alive in the Netherlands eventually shared his 13,000 guilders estate. All of his brothers and 2 of his sisters had also died by then, only leaving his younger sister Maria and several nephews and nieces to inherit his estate.

very best wishes

Anne

Well, no pure coincidence: I did not check the dates of the respective deeds, but if they were the same one may assume that Willem used this visit to arrange several deeds he needed in one visit...

Thanks again Rene and Geert for the transcription.

The deeds were actually about 10 days apart, it's just that they followed in order in the notary records.

Another interesting point is the notary in Delft they used- Jacob van Santen was married to Anna Willemsdr Kittensteijn, the daughter of Willem L Kittensteyn. So the family were using their brother in law in Delft to act as their notary for this and other deeds, including Aeltgen's pre nuptial contract!

very best wishes to you both.

Anne
