1644- follow on document

This is a follow on deed from the one posted yesterday for Anna van Brouchoven.

Several of the same people are named again, e.g. Jacob van Brouchoven, Mr Swanenburch, and I think Dutch East Indies company- as debtor?

It would be great if Anna's address was given- I believe she lived in Oude Delft.

Thanks for any help- here's the URL link

with thanks

Anne

Geert just beat me to it :), so I will keep it to the summary

No address mentioned, other than she is mentioned as 'living in Delft'. It is an authorisation (procuratie) to act on her behalf of a certain person named Swanenburg, who was alderman (schepen) at the time. She herself is mentioned as being widow of the late Willem Kittensteijn, who had also been an alderman of Delft. Mister Swanenburg was authorized by her to act in the matter of receiving a sum of 986 Carolus guilders that were registered on her name in the accounts of the Delft Chamber of the West Indies Company, this sum being the heritage of her late brother, mr. Jacob van Broeckhoven, who had been a deputee in the Dutch States-Provincial ('Gedeputeerde Staten').

Super quick work Geert and Rene. Thank you both very much.

Just wanted to check a detail- using 'google translate' which as we know is not always super reliable, it has translated  'haer neve' as nephew. Can it also mean 'uncle'?

Pity no actual address but I know she bought a property in 'Oude Delft' so am trying to narrow it down. I'll try tracing the witnesses as I assume they were neighbours- perhaps.....

very best wishes.

Anne, he witnesses could be neighbours of the notary, too; when they are specialle invited notaries recorded this carefully.. The online repertory of officials and politicians in the Dutch Republic mentions a lot of functions of Jacob van Broechoven, see https://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/repertoriumambtsdragersambtenaren1428… , but this repertory has no section for the constituent chambers of the Dutch West Inides Company. The bioghraphical aeticle by Van der Aa, https://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/retroboeken/vdaa/?page=406&source=aa_… , does not mention anything about the Indies, too (II, col. 1362) .

It is indeed interesting to look for the Broeckhoven familiy in the archives of Erfgoed Leiden, https://www.erfgoedleiden.nl/ .  The city Leiden had a kamer (chamber) of councillors for tbe WIC, just as Amsterdam. The Nationaal Archief has an index for investors of the WIC chamber Amsterdam, see https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/zoeken?activeTab=nts . In thier book Sporen van de slavernij in Leiden (Leiden 2017) Gert Oostindie and Karwan Fatah-Black write about races of slavery in Leiden, see https://lup.nl/publications/history/dutch-history/sporen-van-de-slavern… .

Dear Otto

Thank you so much for all the fascinating links you sent about Jacob van Brouchoven. Seems he was quite a character!

Anna named her youngest son Jacob and he too had links to the VOC, eventually becoming the Governor in Ceylon in 1649.

Good point about the witnesses, I hadn't thought of that. I know of Govert Rota as he was related to one of my pottery 'ladies' who I researched earlier.

very best wishes.

Anne
