This concerns Adriaen Class van der Mate (or Maet) and a marriage contract made in 1629.
His bride was Martigen Adriaensdr Kninnerberch- although when they married 2 days later her surname was given as Duijnenberch.
Does it give information about his occupation, children etc? This is his second marriage as his first wife had died earlier that year.
Thanks for any help that can be given.
Anne
Hi Anne,
It is a marriage contract between Adriaen Claesz vander Mate, living in Delfshaven, company master with the Deatch East-Indies Company (VOC) for the Delft branch of the VOC (compagniemeester der Ostindische Compagnie voor de Kamer van Delft). He is indeed mentioned as widower and was accompanied and assisted by his father Claes Aelbrechtszen vander Mate and by his good acquaintance Jeremias van Straten. Bride-to-be was Maritgen Ariensdochter van Kninenberch, at the time of this contract living in Maasland and widow of Joos Iansz Pols. She was accompanied and assisted by her nephew Adriaen Allerdszen Cleywech, who was secretary of Maasland.
The document states that all revenues and debts generated during the marriage will be on the account of the groom-to-be and that there is no mutual household. If either of them would die, the inheritants of the deceased will be entitled to the inheritance of the part the deceased contributed at the moment of marriage; in case Adriaen would be the first to die, Maritgen would be entitled to inherit a childrens' part of the inheritance.
For as far as I can tell, there are no children from the marriage between Adriaen and Maritgen (yet). The document states that any children from this marriage would not inherit the usufruct of inherited assets, but in stead would receive a sum of 300 Carolus guilders (in case there would be only 1 child) or an equal part of a total of 600 Carolus guilders (in case there would be 2 or more children).
Hi Rene
Great information revealed by this document. Thank you as always.
I assume company master for VOC in Delft would have been a good job?
Adrian was grandfather to Barbara Rotteveel who bought her own pottery factory in Delft in 1671. Both Adrian and Claus van der Mate, her great grandfather were present at her baptism in 1627 in Delft.
best wishes
Anne
