Just so I can fully understand early 17th century finances here does that mean Frans paid 2000 Guilders in cash for the house? Or has he taken a loan out to buy the house? Or just tax he owes the government -like a property tax?

Hi Anne,

The actual payment to the seller was 2000 guilders Frans paid directly ('gereet gelt' = 'money at hand'); this does not exclude the possibility he took a loan for it, but this was no part of this transaction. The annual interests mentioned are taxes for the use of the lot (erfpacht, still in use in older cities) and a tax levied on transactions.
