1611- House sale, Delft

Concerns Symon Mes. Not sure if this was taxes to pay on a property or he was selling a house? If so is it possible to know where in Delft this was?

Many thanks as always.

Anne

Hi Anne,

This registration concerns the tax one had to pay to the town on the sale and transfer of real estate, usually a specified percentage of the sum the real estate was sold for. In this case, the registration concerns the sale of the house mentioned in the document you mentioned in https://watstaatdaer.nl/forum/1610-power-attorney!

Apart from this tax on the actual sale and transfer, the buyer was also responsible for the taxes levied on the property by either the town (as leasehold) or the Estates of Holland (the 20th penning tax on property)

Very interesting Rene. Thanks for the explanation.

As we know Hans Mes and Symon were living at Marktveld nz I wonder how many properties they owned there?

I've also found another document - dated 1620-1634, which features Jasper Mes and Hans Mes, so father and son. As we know that Jasper died before 1599 I'm puzzled why there's a document with his name on it at that late date.

Perhaps you could have a look please so I can understand it.

with thanks

Anne

This register mentions consecutive owners of the real estate the tax was levied on. The real estate concerning the Mes(ch) family apparently was owned collectively by Jaspers' heirs and his son Hans apparently bought the house for himself from his co-heirs and siblings.

Oh that's very interesting Rene. Thank you.

Hans must have been doing well as a goldsmith to buy out his siblings from the property in Markt. Or perhaps his wife's inheritance from her father in 1623 helped?

That's another area to explore....

very best wishes

Anne
