Dear Geert
Many thanks for this transcription.
It leads to some interesting questions-
Why would you need to take an oath at a castle?
Why did you need to take an oath to become a brewer?
If Frederick is a 'naturalised citizen' does that mean he came from somewhere else, rather than Delft?
All very intriguing.
very best wishes
Anne
Dear Anne, guilds were keen on admitting qualified people, hence they asked someone to vouch for Frederik as a surety or bail. Borch with an o stands for bail, a castle or fortification is most tiomes written as burch with an u, also as a suffix.
Otto
Thanks so much for the clarification which helps make much more sense of the document.
I'm afraid 'Google translate' can sometimes be misleading specially when the meaning of a word hinges on one letter. That's why the experts on this forum are so helpful to a non-Dutch speaker :-)
very best wishes
