Hi Anne,

The person appearing is Aeriaentje Jansdr van Dijssel, mentioned as 'before this' widow of the late Claes Jansz van Straten, now married to Jan Harmensz van Dijssel, grootschipper [skipper of a seafaring vessel], living in Delft, having passed the prenuptial agreement with her husband before Nicolaes Vrijenbergh, notary in Delft on 24 January 1655. Aeriaentje confirmed to have a debt to Maritje Gerritsdr, widow of the late Dirck Pietersz Koock, living in Rotterdam, for the total amount of 2,500 guilders, handed over to her on 1 May 1659. She promises to pay back the amount of 2,500 guilders, together with one year of interest at 4 percent, on 1 May 1660. In case she will not have paid the amount back by then, the interest rate will be continued. She will however be permitted to continue the loan only as long as the one lending her the money will allow her to. The remainder of the deed contains the common formula about putting her person and her possessions as collateral.

Such a pity they weren't required to say what the money was going to be used for.

I need to double check my files. It could well be to do with the purchase of one of the pottery factories in Delft she was involved with.

Can you tell if she has signed her name?

It's interesting that this is the first document she signed. Up until this date she usually used an 'X' on legal deeds.
