1623- Inventory list,

This is a page from De Burgh's  possession inventories (boedels) that mention Delft blue and porcelain.

I don't really understand what it contains - except obviously lists of porcelain items, but for example on the first page- I think the entry for 23 Oct 1624- I can make out the word 'schilder'- which I think means 'painter'?

It would be great to understand more fully what this is all about.

with many thanks as always.

Anne

This is a very interesting piece, as this text is related to the extensive trade in tulips (i.e. tulip bulbs), which in the end led to excessive prices (one specific bulb could be worth more than a house) and would lead to the krach of 1637; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania.

Dear Rene

What a wonderful find!

Thanks for the links to Tulipmania and the artist Jan Serange, both very interesting.

The Portuguese tulip was a dwarf variety no more than 16inches tall, originally grown wild in Portugal.

I've read that Serange was a seascape and botanical painter - but alas I haven't found any examples of his work online.

Can I just ask, below this entry although divided by a line, the same date 23 October 1624 states Aerdewerk-pottery? Would this still relate to Seranges estate do you think?

Also in very small writing above -30 April 1625- shows Seranges name again...is this also about the tulips?

A really enjoyable entry to discover- thanks for your help with that.

warmest best wishes

Anne

Hi Anne,

I am not very familiar with De Burghs' source. But I do think the line drawn demarcates two separate findings of inventories. The small text is already transcribed under the text left and below:

I was also not able to find images of any paintings, he appears to have had some small works of seascapes and floralia; according to one souce he was also a breeder of tulips :)!

Mr A H H van der Burgh (1845-1904)  was an early collector of Delftware, and his collection was the first to be included in a Dutch museum collection in The Hague.

He was also an archival researcher of notarial protocols. He created a card system with the abundance of data from the original sources. This large amount of archival data about potteries and factories came into the possession of Delft archives. However even today it's very difficult to understand the system he used, and the professional archivist in Delft admit that! But if you can decipher his sources, which Hoekstra Klein, a Dutch writer who published over 20 books about various pottery factories did, they can provide invaluable information for any researcher.

I have my sights set on uncovering all the references to Petronella van Dijssel in Der Burgh's cards, but need to go to Delft to do that myself!

Thanks for the clarification everything was included about Serange.

very best wishes

Anne
