1536-1618- Orphanage, Delft

This concerns Joris Willemsz, brewer, and includes Frans Adriaensz van der Dussen, his brother in law: Surety?

I assume this document is undated as the record isn't specific to any year?

Any further information about these 2 people would be very helpful.

With thanks.

Anne

Hi Anne, the date is in the first lines of the deed: 6 October 1592.

Frans Adriaens van der Dusse appears before the governors (weesmeesteren) of the local Orphans' Chamber (Weeskamer) and declares to owe the 5 children of the late Heyndrick Joosten had with his wife Quirina Quirinendochter van der Meer the sum of 600 guilders. For the interest and taxes he has to pay an annual sum of 37 guilders and 10 stuivers. This sum should be free from taxes on transfers, unless indicated otherwise by (new) placcards or ordinances. The aforementioned annual sum should be paid each year on 28 June, starting on 28 June 1593. He is allowed to pay back the entire amount borrowed, provided that he will announce this at least 6 months in advance. To guarantee his payment, he puts his house, yard and brewery as collaterals. These are situated at the eastern side of the Brabantse Turfmarkt in Delft; the brewery is called Den Ham and located at the bend of the Achterom. The latter location is known from an article on the buy-out of multiple Delft breweries by trhe mason Pieter Passant, who bought numerous breweries that had fallen in decay in the early 1600s, partially tore those down and built luxurious town houses on the premises, making mason Passant very wealthy. He bought the brewery Den Ham in 1630; remarkkable is that he had also bought the Roskam brewery in 1620. See for a Dutch article on this mason https://www.achterdegevelsvandelft.nl/achtergrondverhalen/bierbrouwerij…

Back to this deed: his brothers-in-law, merchant Maerten Jansz and Joris Willemsz, brewer in De Roscam also appear for the governors' of the Orphans' Chamber and declare to be the guarantors for the payment of this loan. The crossed out section mentions the real estate put as collatoral by the guarantors:
- Maerten Jansz: his house and yard at the south side of the Korenmarkt
- Joris Willemsz: his house, yard, and brewery near the Rotterdamse Poort

According to the text in the margin at the bottom of the left page, Cornelis van Beest, governor of the Orphans' Chamber, acting on behalf of the children of the late Heyndrick Joosten, declared that on 18 March 1605 Frans Adriaenss van der Dussen had paid back the full loan with all additional costs involved.

Maerten Jansz also acted as guarantor in the deed preceding this deed, but as the first page is missing, unclear who he was a guarantor for.

Hi Rene

That's very enlightening thank you, specially including the date.

I knew Frans Adrieensz van der Dussen was Joris Willemsz (Roscam's) brother in law, as his sister Elizabeth married Joris. It's their daughter Elisabeth Jorisdr Roscam who married Hans Mesch the goldsmith, the family you helped me with before.

There is another document from the orphan chamber about Joris Willemsz, brewer. I'm not sure if he is the borrower or Gerrit Michael's Camerling is?

I'll attach it to my reply and if you have time perhaps you could have a quick look at it for me?

With grateful thanks as always.

Anne

Many thanks also for the link to mason Passant. I can't wait to visit Delft again and take a good look at all the locations mentioned in my research :-)

On 20 July 1591 Joris Willemsz, brewer in de Roskam, appeared before the governors of the Orphans' Chamber of Delft. He stated to have received from Heijndrick Vranckensz van Diemen, acting as legal guardian over Margareta Gerritsdochter, daughter of Gerit Michielsz Camerlijng, an amount of 1000 Carolus guilders. Joris Willemsz declares he will keep this sum, paying a net sum (free of any taxes) of 52 guilders and 10 stuivers each year, to be paid each year on 20 July, the first payment to be made on 20 July 1592. Joris is allowed to pay amount back in full, provided that he will announce that at least 6 months in advance. He puts his house, yard and brewery as collateral; according to this deed those were situated near the South Gate ('bij die Suytpoort') and was called Die Roscam. Together with Joris appeared Jacon Ariaensz vanden Dusse, brewer in Die Ludt and Frans Ariensz vanden Dusse.

The note in the margin states that on 26 July 1603 Heijndrick Vranckensz van Diemen, acting as legal guardian over Margareta Gerritsdochter, appeared before the governors of the Orphans' Chamber and stated to have received the full amount including all applicable interest and costs from brewers Joris Willemsz.

Many thanks Rene. That's really helpful.

Interesting to see how Joris Willemsz brother- in- laws are quite involved in all these business dealings.

I've also realised that the last document you translated for me for Frans Adriensz van den Dussen regarding money borrowed from 5 children were all his step-children from his second marriage to Quirina van der Meer.

Nice to tie up the loose ends :-)

warmest best wishes

Anne
